10 Questions with Plastic Mermaids

The band are just finishing the recording of their much anticipated debut album; mixing piano ballads with soaring strings, electronic beats and delicate vocals. The end result a crashing, swirling ethereal soundscape of beautiful and unique melodies. Renowned for their electrifying live performances, catch Plastic Mermaids at The Camden Assembly on the 11th of July.

We caught up with Chris Newnham the guitarist and singer in the band.

Where do you go to discover new music?
I tend to get recommendations from my band members actually which is quite nice as they have quite diverse music taste so it keeps it interesting ha or I'll catch something I like on 6 music or jools.

What have we got to look forward to with you this year?
All of the above hopefully, we've just finished mastering our album at abbey road which was a rad experience and now just can't wait to get it out there. The festival's we've got this summer are rad so looking forward to getting out and playing them we have a choir in our live show now so excited to gig that.

First song you fell in love with?
Ooh that's tricky because it was a very long time ago now but probably little wing by Jimi Hendrix my dad used to play it to me when I was a wee lad and yeah that got me obsessed with that song and I still love it now.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
There are so many people it would be sweet to work with maybe someone like Gorillaz I think we could do something rad. Or someone like Justice would be weird but probably fun.

What would you most like to own on vinyl?

I'd love to own 'Funeral' by Arcade Fire as it's one of my favourite albums but I don't have it on vinyl.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I'm continuously listening to Soulwax at the moment ever since seeing them live at a couple of festivals last year it's been on repeat!

What's your guilty pleasure song?
Haha this is dangerous but I really love Justin Timberlake it's the raddest music when you actually listen to it.

What inspires you to write music?
All sorts of things other musicians playing, jamming with my friends, I quite often have musical ideas slash inspiration while I'm running which is quite funny I take my phone with me now and if i have any little melody's I record them while I run I must look like a nutter.

What's your favourite song to play live?
It's actually a song from our new record which I can't tell you yet ha so you'll have to wait.

Where would you most like to play?

I think venue wise probably Shepard's bush empire I love that venue hopefully one day that would be the dream!
