10 Questions with Angie McMahon

Australian artist Angie McMahon is one to watch. Intoxicating melodies combined with her effortless songwriting, she is captivating audiences on and off stage. Angie has played support for Father John Misty, Alanis Morissette, The Shins, and fellow Australian singer-songwriters Angus and Julia Stone. This year has seen her release singles, play her own sold out London headline show and all before the release of her debut Album.

The new single ‘Keeping Time’ is an energetic offering with guitar driven progressions and powerful vocals. An exciting glimpse into a much anticipated first album, we had to find out more about Angie.

Where do you go to discover new music?
Mostly conversations with the music loving heads around me...and I like when bands post their favourite albums or songs on social media. Also I Shazam a lot around Melbourne, in cafes and cinemas and things, which gets embarrassing. Especially when you Shazam something that is really obviously famous, and you feel like people think you're silly for not knowing.

What have we got to look forward to with you this year?
My album is nearly done, so I've got my head down to get that ready for release! Yay! Going to tour Australia soon, and a couple other exciting secret things... *mystery* *intrigue* *suspense*

First song you fell in love with?
TOUGH but probably Badlands - Bruce Springsteen. Spent a lot of time in the back of the car asking Mum or Dad to go back to the start of the song several times - less than 10 seconds into the song - so we could air drum the intro again, and then finally would listen through. Then repeat.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Stevie Nicks, Angel Olsen, Justin Vernon.

What would you most like to own on vinyl?
Hymns of the 49th Parallel - KD Lang. She covers all these wonderful Canadian songwriters with beautiful arrangements, it was one of my favourite albums as a kid, but I don't think it exists on vinyl! There's a bunch more I'd like, but I just haven't bothered to buy them yet because my speakers are no good

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Lots of Leif Vollebekk and Joni Mitchell.

What's your guilty pleasure song?
So many...I drive around listening to an Australian radio station called SmoothFM, "your easy place to relax". Lots of easy cheese. My life is basically guilty pleasure songs.

What inspires you to write music?
Just about everything… I'm particularly inspired watching other people perform great songs, appreciating someone else take charge of the art form, and then finding I'm in the mood to go and make something of my own.

What's your favourite song to play live?
Actually not my own song, at the minute… Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac

Where would you most like to play?
Anywhere they'll have me!
